The gift is usually decided long before the size is. You know you want to give her something intimate and quietly beautiful — and then one question arrives and stops everything: what size is she. Most people abandon the idea there and buy a candle instead. They should not. It is entirely possible to gift lingerie without knowing her size, and the method is simpler than it sounds: choose the pieces that were designed to forgive one.
This is the guidance we give to the husbands, fiancés, sisters and friends who write to us from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah every gifting season. Which styles hold their elegance across a range of bodies. How to establish her size without asking. Whether to go up or down. What to do if you still get it wrong — and how to time the parcel so it arrives before the long Eid Al Etihad weekend rather than after it.
In brief
- Sleepwear is the answer to the size problem: robes, nightgown-and-robe sets and lounge sets are cut in S, M and L and tie or drape rather than fasten to a measurement.
- If you are estimating, always size up — a generous robe reads as luxurious, while a piece that is too small cannot be worn at all.
- One care label on a garment she already wears often tells you her size; French and EU 38 corresponds to UK 10, and French 90 to a UK 34 band.
- Keep tags, hygiene seals and packaging intact so an exchange stays possible, and ask before sending anything back.
- When her size is genuinely unknown, the Belle Bonjour Gift Card at AED 250 is a legitimate choice, not a retreat — order by mid-November to land before White Friday on 27 November 2026.
Can you gift lingerie without knowing her size?
Yes. You can gift lingerie without knowing her size by choosing size-forgiving pieces instead of fitted ones — a wrap robe that ties to her own waist, a nightgown-and-robe set, or a Tencel lounge set. Sleepwear cut in S, M and L, with adjustable straps and generous drape, does the fitting for you.
The instinct that stops people is a sound one. Nobody wants to hand over a box that quietly says I think you are this size. But fitted lingerie — an underwired bra, a boned body, a bias-cut slip in numbered sizing — is only one small part of what a lingerie house makes, and it is the wrong place to begin when you are guessing.
Begin with sleepwear instead. A robe, a nightgown, a two-piece lounge set: these are built with ease in them. They are sized in S, M and L rather than 34B or FR 38. They are tied and draped rather than fastened to a measurement. And the fabrics do their share of the work — washed silk satin, modal jersey, Tencel lyocell, jacquard viscose all move with a body rather than holding it in place. A robe that runs a little generous reads as luxurious. A bra that runs a little generous reads as a mistake.
This is not a compromise made for the sake of the gift. Across our Robes & Loungewear, the pieces women come back to are almost never the most fitted ones. They are the ones she can put on at the end of a long day in the heat without thinking about her body at all. The most considered gift is rarely the most measured one.

Which lingerie and sleepwear styles are the most size-forgiving?
The most size-forgiving styles are wrap and kimono robes, nightgown-and-robe sets, satin slips with adjustable straps, soft-cup bralette sets in stretch lace, and shirt-and-trouser lounge sets with a relaxed waist. Each adapts to her rather than the reverse, which is precisely why French houses have cut them this way for a century.
Four shapes carry almost every successful lingerie gift in the UAE, and all four tolerate a size either way.
- The kimono robe and nightgown. A belt is a fitting instrument — she sets the waist herself. Réveil — Kimono Robe & Nightgown · Ivory pairs a fluid ivory gown with a wide-sleeved robe over it, at AED 279, and works on a wider range of frames than anything cut close to the body.
- The slip-and-robe set. Adjustable straps on the slip, a tie at the robe, lace that gives. The Powder Lace-Trim Satin Slip and Robe Set at AED 284 is the two-piece we suggest most often for a first intimate gift — the powder tone flatters warm and cool skin alike.
- The lounge set. For a sister, a close friend, or anyone where sleepwear should read as elegant rather than private. The Beige Tencel Shirt and Wide-Leg Trousers Lounge Set, AED 284, is breathable Tencel lyocell with a soft shirt shoulder and a wide leg — forgiving at the hip, cool in September, layerable by December.
- The occasion set. For an anniversary or an engagement, LEA — Vegan Silk Satin Nightgown & Robe Set · Ivory at AED 659 has the weight and fall of silk charmeuse with a lace-trimmed bodice, and still sizes gently.
What to avoid when guessing: underwired bras, waist-cinched corsetry, anything described as bodycon, and stockings in a single size. Our Best Sellers lean towards robes and sets for exactly this reason.
How can you find out her size discreetly, and convert French sizing to UK?
Read one care label on a garment she already wears often — a nightdress, a slip, a loose dress — and note the size and the sizing country. French and EU 36 is UK 8, 38 is UK 10, 40 is UK 12, 42 is UK 14. For bras, French 85 equals a UK 34 band, 90 a UK 36.
There is a respectful way to do this and an unrespectful one. The respectful version takes ten seconds: turn out the label of something she reaches for constantly and already loves the fit of, then put it back. One label is enough. You are not auditing her wardrobe.
If you cannot get to a label, ask her sister, her mother or the friend she shops with. In Gulf families this is the single most reliable route, and it has the useful side effect of a second opinion on colour. Sisters rarely get this wrong.
Reading the number you find
Turkish and European garments usually carry EU sizing, French houses their own, and the two sit close together:
- FR/EU 36 — UK 8 — US 4
- FR/EU 38 — UK 10 — US 6
- FR/EU 40 — UK 12 — US 8
- FR/EU 42 — UK 14 — US 10
- FR/EU 44 — UK 16 — US 12
For bras, the French band number runs fifteen above the European: FR 85 is EU 70 and a UK 34 band; FR 90 is a UK 36. Cup letters B, C and D translate directly, while a French E is broadly a UK DD.
Letter sizing is kinder still. In sleepwear, S generally covers UK 8–10, M UK 10–12 and L UK 12–14 — which is why a lingerie size guide matters far less for a robe than for a bra. Check the measurements on the product page against a garment she owns if you want to be certain.

Should you buy a size larger or a size smaller as a gift?
Size up. A robe or nightgown that runs slightly generous still looks intentional — the belt draws it in, the shoulder drops softly, the hem falls a little longer. A piece that is too small cannot be worn, and it carries a comment about her body that you never meant to make.
This is the one rule in gifting intimates that never bends. The downside of a size too large is aesthetic and easily solved. The downside of a size too small is emotional, and no exchange policy repairs it.
There is a design reason as well as a tactful one. A generous cut is how these garments were drawn in the first place. Washed silk satin and viscose jacquard are at their best with a little surplus — that is where the drape and the movement of light live. Pull the same fabric taut across the body and you lose the very thing you paid for. A kimono robe one size up looks like a robe from a French atelier. The same robe one size down looks like a mistake in the order.
Two practical notes. First, if she is between sizes and tall, take the larger for length as much as width; nightgowns are cut to a standard height and a longer hem always reads more elegant. Second, if you are buying a two-piece and her proportions differ top to bottom, the sets with a drawstring or elasticated waist — the Tencel shirt and wide-leg trousers, for instance — absorb that difference without any compromise on how it hangs.
What if the size is wrong? Exchanges, hygiene seals and the gift card
Keep the tags, the hygiene seal and the packaging intact until she has tried it on — that is what keeps an exchange possible for intimates anywhere in the UAE. Write to us with her preferred size and we will arrange it. If her size is genuinely unknown, the Belle Bonjour Gift Card at AED 250 is the honest answer.
Intimate apparel is handled differently from other clothing everywhere in the world, the UAE included, and for good reason. An exchange depends on the piece being unworn, unwashed, with its tags still attached and any hygiene seal or sealed packaging unbroken. So the practical instruction for the giver is small but firm: do not remove the tags to make the box look prettier, and keep the tissue and the outer packaging until she has tried it on. Then do contact us before anything travels back, so we can confirm the correct size is with us and send it out in the same movement.
And if you simply do not know — not her size, not her sizing country, not anyone who could tell you — then choose the Gift Card at AED 250 and stop apologising for it. A gift card is not an absence of thought when it is presented with one. Tell her what you would have chosen. Say that you wanted her to feel the weight of the satin in her own hands before deciding, or that you had the ivory robe in mind but wanted the fit to be hers. She then spends an afternoon in the Premium Collection choosing, which for many women is the better half of the gift.
Is an intimate gift appropriate — and when should it arrive?
Sleepwear, robes and lounge sets are appropriate for a wife, fiancée, sister or close friend across the Gulf; more intimate pieces are best reserved for a spouse. For the 2026 season, order by mid-November to arrive before White Friday on 27 November and the Eid Al Etihad break on 1 and 2 December.
The etiquette question deserves a direct answer, because it stops as many gifts as sizing does. In the Gulf, a robe, a nightgown or a Tencel lounge set is a warm and entirely proper gift between women — for a sister's birthday, a friend's wedding, a new mother in the first quiet weeks. It sits comfortably in the same register as fine cotton or good perfume. Lingerie proper, the fitted and revealing end of the catalogue, belongs to a marriage. Keeping that line is not prudishness, it is fluency, and it is why the sets in this article are all sleepwear first.
Timing the parcel in the 2026 season
Four moments stack closely this year. White Friday falls on 27 November 2026. Eid Al Etihad follows on 1 and 2 December, with the days around it likely to give many households in Dubai and Abu Dhabi a long weekend away. The Dubai Shopping Festival opens in mid-December, and year-end and New Year close the run.
Order in mid-November if the gift is meant for the long weekend, and earlier again if it is travelling to Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah or elsewhere in the Gulf. If discretion matters — a shared household, an office reception, a curious child — say so with your order and we will keep the outside of the parcel quiet. And put the gift where she will open it alone. An intimate gift unwrapped in a room full of relatives is a lovely thing given at the wrong moment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size lingerie should I buy if I don't know her size?
Choose sleepwear cut in S, M and L rather than fitted lingerie in numbered or bra sizing. A wrap robe, a nightgown-and-robe set or a Tencel lounge set fits across a range of bodies because it ties, drapes or has adjustable straps. If you must guess, take the middle size for a petite-to-average frame, and go one size up rather than down.
How can I find out her size discreetly, without asking her?
Read one care label on a garment she already loves and wears often — a slip, a nightdress, a loose dress — and note both the size and the country of sizing. If that is not possible, ask her sister or her closest friend, who almost certainly knows. One quiet question to one trusted person is more respectful than searching through her drawers.
Is it better to buy lingerie a size larger or a size smaller as a gift?
Larger, without hesitation. A robe or nightgown that runs generous still reads as luxurious — the belt draws it in, the shoulders drop softly, the hem falls longer. A piece that is too small cannot be worn at all, and it carries an unintended comment about her body. When you are estimating, size up and let the cut do the rest.
Which sleepwear and lingerie styles are the most size-forgiving?
Wrap and kimono robes that tie at the waist, nightgown-and-robe sets, satin slips with adjustable straps, soft-cup bralette sets in stretch lace, and shirt-and-trouser lounge sets with an elasticated or drawstring waist. Fabrics matter too: washed silk satin, modal jersey, Tencel lyocell and jacquard viscose all move with the body instead of holding it to a measurement.
Can lingerie be exchanged or returned in the UAE if the size is wrong?
Usually yes, provided the piece is unworn, unwashed, with tags attached and any hygiene seal or packaging intact — this is standard practice for intimates across the UAE, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi alike. Keep the box and the tissue until she has tried it on, and contact us before sending anything back so we can confirm the exchange and the correct size.
If you are still deciding, take your time with the Robes & Loungewear and the Premium Collection — read the fabrics, look at how each piece is cut, and let that guide you rather than a number you are unsure of. And if you would like a second opinion before you order, write to us with what you know of her: her height, the clothes she reaches for, the colours she wears at home. We will tell you honestly which piece we would send, and which we would not.
